Depending on the situation, the equipment used can vary. Generally we use 5.0+ mega pixel digital cameras, camcorders w/infra red night vision, digital thermometers, Cell Sensor EMF meters, and digital voice recorders. Interviewing people, research ahead of time and an open mind are also neccessary.
